THE PRESIDENT

I requested Mr. Hoover to defer his food campaign until the week following the closing of Liberty Loan campaign October twenty-seventh instead of carrying on his intensive campaign for enrollment during the concluding week of Liberty Loan campaign. He is disinclined to do it. It would be in my judgement most unfortunate to have these two campaigns in progress at same time. Chairman Davison of Red Cross and Doctor Mott of Young Men Christian Association have each gladly deferred their intensive campaigns until after completion of Liberty Loan. Have asked Crosby to see you and explain situation. Earnestly hope you will request Hoover to postpone his campaign for a week. No harm can come of such postponement while serious hurt to Liberty Loan might otherwise result. Why take any unnecessary chance on a matter of such vital consequence as the success of the Liberty Loan especially when the postponement cannot conceivably injure the work of food administration. Having wonderfully enthusiastic meeting and most gratifying manifestations of patriotic spirit in all places I have visited.
WG McAdoo.
