Text

Dear Mr. President

We have just received the German text of Prince Maximilian's speech, which, however, is so garbled that we have cabled to the Legation at The Hague to make a careful translation of it and to cable the translation in full. The German text shows that the text which we have already received through the press differs materially in certain respects: for instance, in the German text Prince Maximilian is reported to have mentioned Alsace-Lorraine, although the text is so garbled that we are not sure just what he intended to say, (while the text as received yesterday through the press makes no mention of Alsace-Lorraine.) I shall, of course, send you the full translation of the speech as soon as it is received from The Hague.

Faithfully yours,
Robert Lansing

The President,
The White House.
