Text
My dear Mr. President
Robert Lansing
The President,
The White House.
I saw Justice Brandeis yesterday morning about Eugene Meyer and explained to him the situation. Meyer arrived in Washington this morning and came to the Department with Brandeis who had gone over the matter with him. He was very pleasant about it and at once declared his willingness to withdraw his acceptance.
It will be easy to explain to those whom he has told that he was going on the Commission, but the fact that we do not send a Jew will have to be explained in some way because of its effect in this country. It is a delicate question and needs very careful handling.
Robert Lansing
The President,
The White House.
