I went into New York with your father on Friday as we had planned, and we had a pleasant day and night there together;—going to see Nazimova in the evening. He sailed at ten o'clock Sat. morning looking very well and bright. It was certainly good to see him get out of Princeton for a time. He means to write his two remaining chapters, and prepare t some essays for publication; so that he will have enough to do to keep his mind dwelling constantly on Princeton affairs.
Things have taken a most unexpected turn and I too am going away for a little visit,—your father settled it all in a minute on Friday, when he found that on next Friday Stockton starts for Savannah for a week of lecturing. He decided it was just the change I needed;—so it is all settled. The Sav. people have been written to and have telegraphed. I shall probably be in Georgia two weeks altogether, stopping at Rome and Atlanta on my way back;—and last of all at Raleigh! Won't that part of it be good? I wish I could stop in Balt. too, but I must be back by the 14th of Feb., and of course since I am to see you at Easter it is more important to stop with Nell. Adeline Scott is to stay with Margaret and they are planning a great frolic. Madge will sail (she sayspositively!) on the 24th of Jan. reaching here on or about the 5th. I am distressed that I will be away, for she and Margaret will be leaving a week after my return for New Orleans.Beth is to have a coming-out reception and dance dance at the Inn on the 12th of Feb. and Mrs. Hibben is anxious to know if you cannot possibly come to it,—but as it isnt even on a Friday I told her you couldn't.—We are both very well. With love beyond words, I am, darling, as ever, Your devoted
Mother.
