Description:Enlisted in the U.S. Army from 1916 to 1919, Otto Kappelmann's letters – written primarily to his sister, Anna-Marie Bubendey – describe military camp life on the Texas border and in South Carolina. Kappelmann writes about African-American recruits, health issues, and German prisoners of war. The collection includes postcards of military camps and trenches on the front. Otto C.W. Kappelmann was born in Brooklyn, New York, November 15, 1888 and later died in Upper Monclair, New Jersey in March of 1960. After serving in the army during World War I he became a banker in New York and later worked full time as a volunteer for the Red Cross in New Jersey. His father, Otto Friedrich Kappelmann, was born in Osten, Germany, October 10, 1854 and later died in Brooklyn, New York in November of 1925. He immigrated to the United States in 1876 and lived in Brooklyn where he was a career Wall Street Banker. Otto C.W. had one sister, Anna-Marie Kappelmann-Bubendey, who he frequently corresponded with during his enlistment (1916-1919). [show more]
